Three Things To Do Around Cap Haitien
Labadee is about 3.5 miles (5.6 Km) from Cap Haitien, Haiti. It is an entirely different world from that created by Royal Cruiselines at Labadee and if you are adventurous, Cap Haitien is worth a side trip. Other than seeing the real Haiti, there are a number of things to do. I have compiled a list of three things to do if you venture outside the gates of Labadee.
1 – La Citadelle
This might be the most recognizable landmark in Haiti. It sits on the top of one of the tallest points in northern Haiti. Once you arrive at the bottom, there are two ways to get to the top, walk or ride a donkey. If you are in shape, it is a nice hike on a maintained trail. If you are worried about the hike, the donkey is a good option and definitely less strenuous.
2 – Sans Souci Palace
This palace is in Milot and close to the starting point to hike to La Citadelle. The remnants of this palace are impressive and worth a walk through. It is situated at a little higher elevation from the rest of the area, so it overlooks the Milot area.
3 – Cormier Plage
Cormier Plage is just outside the gates of Labadee. It’s a nice beach with a small hotel right on the beach. It is a quiet place to get away from all of the hustle and bustle. They have a small restaurant and plenty of sandy beach.
Cap Haitien is Haiti’s second largest city after Port-au-Prince and there is a lot of hustle and bustle. However, on the outskirts of the city, you find a tranquil country with banana trees and farms. It is an incredible country with history lessons at the ready. “Life is an adventure. Live it!”
